Why Remote? Shopify

Shopify were founding partners of Grow Remote. We asked them on board because we’ve met their people and seen their culture in action. It’s a brilliant place to work and they’ve been a superb addition to the Galway tech and startup community. In advance of them speaking at Grow Remote, we asked them some questions.

What does your company do?

Shopify is the leading commerce platform designed for small and medium-sized businesses worldwide. Whether you sell online, on social media, in store, or out of the trunk of your car, Shopify has you covered. The first Shopify store was our own, and it’s been our mission to make commerce better for everyone ever since.

What’s the background to you having remote teams?

With almost half of our workforce remote, we have always structured our support teams as intentionally remote in order to allow folks to be part of a growing tech company, without relocating. Working from home allows our support team to have improved work-life harmony, eliminate commuting and allow them to work with people from around the world. We scale our teams by ensuring employees work hours within their own time zone, what we call, “following the sun.” With 600,000 merchants in 175 countries around the world, building remote support teams ensure we are giving our merchants the best experience.

What kind of roles do you hire for?

We primarily hire Customer Success Gurus, as well as Tier 2 Technical Support, Tier 3 Technical Support, Merchant Success Managers for remote roles.

How do you manage results remotely?

The idea of the trust battery is essential to how we manage our teams remotely – We encourage employees to build trust with one another and give people the autonomy to do what they do best. Our remote employees have small, direct teams and leads who work with them to maximize their impact.

How do you manage culture remotely?

Building strong employee engagement and a unique remote employee culture is extremely important. We do this by take a ‘remote-first’ approach when communicating with our employees and create specific initiatives designed with them in mind, including Remote Conferences and in person and virtual co-working events. We leverage technology to foster and build intentional relationships and create an inclusive environment.

How can towns and communities make it easier for you to hire there?

We work with local government and agencies for support when entering new markets and existing markets. We believe it is our responsibility to get to know the unique needs of the markets we are hiring in.
